southern magnolia tree

I have a tree over 25years old the trunk is 55inches circumference .This year the leaves at the top of the tree came is very small the tree looks rather thinning, a third of the way up . Do you have any idea what has happened to the tree? I was told Foscaps will help the leaves , then in the spring put medcaps in. Would truly appreciate your help love the tree, thanks Terri

Southern magnolia is not winter hardy to St. Louis, but perhaps you have a protected location or a closely related species. It would be wide to consult a certified arborist about your tree. There is a list of local arborists here:
