The snake is a juvenile black racer. They are born very light-colored and blotched. The blotches will gradually fade to a solid gray-black by adulthood. Juveniles are often mistaken for pygmy rattlers but they are much thinner and have smooth scales and round eye pupils. It's a great snake to keep in your yard, as they eat many insects, toads, other snakes, moles, mice and rats. Unfortunately, this one doesn't look it's going to be a benefit to anyone anymore.
