potato tuber at harvest

Asked August 12, 2016, 3:34 PM EDT

Superior variety grown. At harvest some of the tubers were crumbly and fell apart as if they had been boiled. Outside of the tuber is covered with white substance resembling powdery mildew. What is problem and solution? Thanks

There are several bacterial problems that can cause the tubers to be mushy, as the tuber rots, secondary fungus hence the white growth can form on the outside. Without seeing the tuber a picture or the actual thing, I can not be sure which disease has affllcted it. It is important when planting potatoes to use certified seed and rotate with something other than things in the same family such as tomatoes. But even that does not gaurantee that you will have absolutely no problems.
