small birch trees planted.

Asked August 12, 2016, 10:38 AM EDT

this week I just planted several birch trees in my yard, They look great however this morning, after watering, I came back to check one them and on of the trees was cut if half. The only thing that I have seen in my yard are birds and one small rabbit(which I trying to catch). Could you tell me what predator would do such a thing and just leave the little tree there. Its very discouraging. Thank You.

Any animal that is heavy could have climbed or stepped on your tree resulting in breakage. I cannot tell you which one did it. I could have been a child or dog running through the yard. Or it could have been a larger animal attracted to the moist earth. Look for tracks around the tree.
