Woodchuck under the garage

Asked August 8, 2016, 12:05 PM EDT

I am confident after looking at your article What is digging holes in my yard, I in fact have a woodchuck under my garage. I've seen the holes and the dogs are quite excited about the situation. Can you advise on any more information on how to trap a woodchuck or discourage them from living and under the garage?

Go here to read Minnesota Department of Natural Resources regulations and recommendations regarding woodchuck control: Woodchucks http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/livingwith_wildlife/woodchucks/index.html Some hardware stores and rental companies (Beisswinger's, Hejny, etc.) rent live traps. Be sure to select one large enough for the job. It can be difficult to catch woodchucks with live traps at this time of year because so much succulent food is available. However, knowing where the burrow is and using DNR's "funnel" strategy improve odds of catching the animal. If the beans are growing in rows, anchor a bent span of chicken wire (tent style) over them until the chuck is gone. A lightly covered Leghold trap placed where the chuck goes under the fence would probably be effective, but use of such traps is banned in many places and in any case should not be used where they pose a danger to pets and other non-target animals.
