Filling empty space in pressure canner

When canning 7 quarts in pressure canner but you only have enough chicken for 6 quarts do I need to add a empty jar of water to fill space and do I need to seal with a lid ....hate to waste a lid

Thank You for using AnswerLine. You do not need to add an empty jar when canning a smaller amount of jars than your canner is made for. You can leave the space open. Just be sure everything else is solidly balanced in the canner.
