If your field is irrigated, then species like meadow brome, smooth brome, and orchardgrass make good hay for horses. These species also mix well with alfalfa if you like alfalfa/grass mixed hay for your horses. If you do not have full season irrigation but maybe a limited amount of water in the spring, then species like intermediate and pubescent wheatgrass make acceptable hay for horses. If you do not have any irrigation water, then it is very difficult to grow enough forage to make hay in your area of Colorado.
