Horn Worms

I am writing this email in hopes of gaining information on Tomato Hornworm. I work in a hydroponic tomato greenhouse and again this year gain experience seeing hornworms. We noticed this season more and more Black horn worms than green ones. No idea why the different colours and I tried looking up on goggle but found nothing. We are assuming the black ones are older horn worms ready to start cocoon stages but not sure. Hence reason I am contacted you. Hope you can shed some light on this pesty worms. Carol Eddy

There is a form of hornworm that is black instead of green. It may be that you are seeing that form more often. You can see photos here:
