Unripe Buckthorn seeds - sproutable?

Asked August 3, 2016, 3:26 PM EDT

Hello, I am working on clearing many buckthorn trees from our wooded property. I am wondering about the ones with berries as I have been advised to burn the berried trees and leave the others on the forest floor. Since we do not have a good way to burn the berry branches, I am wondering: will unripe berries still sprout? Thanks for your help, Amber Nelson

The unripe berries probably will continue to mature even though they have been cut off. You really want to get rid of as many of those as possible as the seeds of buckthorn can be viable for 10+ years in the ground. I have even heard up to 20 years when they have been buried and then exposed to sun and water.
