water conservation and collection

Asked August 3, 2016, 12:06 PM EDT

We have recently moved to Marion county from Coos county and live on one and one half acres outside the city limits of Salem. We have a low capacity well- 1-1/2 gallons per minute. If we water the plants ( and that not a lot )we run out of water. Questions 1. How can we find out about some of our options ie. Collecting and holding rain water. 2. recycling grey water.3. New well 4. other options. There is a sprinkling system but thats when we ran out of water. There are a lot of plants and we don't want them to die. Always before we had a vegetable garden but that does not seem possible. We are surrounded by large fir and white oak trees. 2. Selecting and planting low need plants 3. redesigning landscaping for limited water use.

Hello and welcome to Marion County.

We may need to follow up by phone to make sure you get all of the help you need. Here are some resources that should help you get started.

Chrissy Lucas delivers an education program and answers questions related to well water and septic systems. She may be reached at Chrissy.Lucas@oregonstate.edu. She works out of our Extension office in Benton County, but she also serves Marion County. Her website with helpful information is http://wellwater.oregonstate.edu/. It also has a section on limited well water conditions http://wellwater.oregonstate.edu/limited-water.

Neil Bell is an Extension Community Horticulturalist working out of our Marion County office. He specializes in drought tolerant landscapes and will have a lot of information to share. His email is Neil.Bell@oregonstate.edu. I looked at his website, and it does not have this information posted. I suggest you follow up directly via email or call the office - 503-588-5301.

Let me know if you have additional questions or do not find what you need.
