Birch Tree Leaves

Asked August 2, 2016, 1:39 PM EDT

I have a white birch tree in my yard and recently leaves are falling off with holes throughout the leaf. I'm attaching a picture. Any idea of what's causing this and what I can do (if anything) about it? Thank you! Art Shore

The damage in your photo was caused by some kind of chewing insect, most likely a caterpillar or beetle. My best guess would be Japanese beetle, but if this were the case you should have seen them on the plant. Either way, if damage is significant you can treat the tree with an insecticide. Most of the time the damage is only superficial and we don't recommend chemical treatment.
