tap water turns brown after a rainfall

Asked August 2, 2016, 9:17 AM EDT

I noticed that my household tap water is tinged brown following a rainfall but often turning on all the faucets for maybe 5-10 minutes will clear the pipes and cause the water to run clear. The house is connected to city water, not a well. When I tested with a simple water test kit there was no bacteria but the hardness was rated at 250. My landlord said that there is a lot of iron in our water. I noticed that there is a often some fine grit in the water even though it has been run through a water filter. Is the brownish color following a rainfall and/or water hardness a health concern?

I think you need to check with the water utility about this. Rain generally should not affect the quality of water in a municipal water system.
