harvested kale incorrectly-- will it grow back?

Asked August 1, 2016, 10:58 AM EDT

Hi, My friends and I harvested the big bushy Russian Red kale incorrectly-- we basically cut the leaves straight across where it was emerging from the soil without leaving new shoots. Will the kale come back or should it be re-planted with new kale. If it will come back, any tips for hastening this process? Thank you,

Most likely you will not see new growth. The terminal bud at the top center keeps the plant productive. If you want to experiment, keep the plant well watered.
We do recommend that you plant a fall crop. It is not too late. http://extension.umd.edu/growit/vegetable-profiles-leafy-greens
