What kind of grass/weed do I have?

Asked July 30, 2016, 11:42 AM EDT

Good morning, We are experiencing an invasion of these grasses (photos attached). Particularly the brighter yellow one. The example growing in the rocks we believe is crabgrass - the other we are unsure and is the variety that is really taking over the lawn. Any suggestions and recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for the question. The weed in the photos looks like smooth crabgrass. The examples outside the rock bed look like younger plants and the one inside the bed looks mature. This is a common annual weed that comes up each year once the weather warms up enough for it to sprout. It dies once the weather freezes but the seeds remain. The best way to battle it is to apply a pre-emergent herbicide next spring which will keep it from growing.
