White Pine through Storm Damage

Asked July 29, 2016, 2:12 PM EDT

I have a white pine on my shoreline property that was up to about 20' until hit by falling tree which broke off the top ~8' about six weeks ago. Will this tree resume upward growth, perhaps with tying a leading branch upward?

Yes, white pines will resume upward growth. Tying a leading branch upward won't hurt anything but the tree might decide on a different leader. If so, let it have its way.

The following comes from personal experience, not Extension research: I had a white pine topped on my lakeshore about 15 years ago. If you look carefully, you can see a small jog in the trunk. That's it. The tree is beautiful.

Not all conifers will do this but white pine - yes.
