Dogwood Tree White Stripes on Bark

Asked July 28, 2016, 2:33 PM EDT

My pink flowering dogwood tree has started to show strange white markings on its bark. The bark seems brittle and very dry. Our local landscaping guy didn't know what to make of it and he suggested I write to you. Could you look at these pictures and let me know? I am of course interested to know what I can do to resolve this situation. Thanks.

It looks like your dogwood has lichens. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/lichens-trees-and-shrubs If your tree is otherwise healthy, you do not need to worry.
