Asked July 28, 2016, 1:27 PM EDT

This weed was found in a small inland lake. It was first noticed this year in early summer. Located along shoreline and then out into lake. Stands above water that is 6 to 7 feet deep. Most of weed is on shoreline and spreading. Please identify and recommend removal.

Hello and thank you for using eXtension for your aquatic plant identification question., It is difficult to say difinatively from the photos provided what you have sampled. However, I believe that your first photo is Pontederia cordata or common Pickerelweed; and your second and third are Nitella, also a common aquatic plant. Removal of these native plants not necessary. If the plants are inhibiting your beach swimming area you may consider manual removal.

Warm regards,
