Silver Queen Corn Fertilizer

Asked July 28, 2016, 1:02 PM EDT

Will Bone Meal (12-0-0) be sufficient for fertilizing silver queen corn? When and how often should corn be fertilized.

Montgomery County Maryland

Corn is a heavy feeder, meaning it requires a lot of fertilizer for good production. Here is our vegetable profile for sweet corn from our Grow It Eat It section on our website: http://extension.umd.edu/growit/vegetable-profiles-sweet-corn-0

To convert the recommended 1/4 lb. of 10-10-10 to 12-0-0, keep in mind that this does not need to be exact. You can probably substitute one quantify for the other fairly comparably.

A fertilizer ratio such as 12-0-0 means that the first number (which always refers to nitrogen) is 12% of the weight of the fertilizer in the bag. A 10-10-10 would have 10% nitrogen. For more information about fertilizer, here is a helpful pub from our website: http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG42_Soil_Amendments...
