My weeping willow has a spongy looking fungus on a place where the bark is gone. Can I save my tree, and how to do so. from what I read it sounds like it has cankers. the spongy stuff is purplish and off gray in color.

If your willow has one or more places with missing bark, it is dying. The fungus is just a secondary problem that is letting you know that the tree is dying. You can consider discussing this with a certified arborist. vw
