Your tree is a Psidium littorale, Cattley or Strawberry Guava. I am including a publication on this tree from UF/IFAS that will give you more detail on the Cattley Guava. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/ST/ST52900.pdf
Give your mom a break, in horticulture--the more we know, the more we need to know. Learning is never ending which is why horticulture is such an enjoyable hobby or occupation!
