We have a magnolia tree that was planted 2 summers ago. It was about 8 ft tall when planted. This summer it has developed white spots on the bark area and a lot of its leaves are turning brown. HELP.

From your description, it is possible that your magnolia has scale. This URl discusses numerous diseases of magnolia. You should be able to match the symptoms and photos with your tree and treat accordingly. You are wise to get on top of this immediately.
