What kind of grass grows in sandy shady areas?

Asked July 18, 2016, 7:09 PM EDT

My husband and I just moved to Daytona Beach, Florida. There is not much of a front yard and we are looking to either sod or plant grass seed. (sodding would be nice). Please tell us what kind of grass will grow well in sandy soil that has a lot of shade? Thank you so much.

I am not a turf or horticulture specialist so cannot answer your question very well, other than to direct you to some resources that should be much more valuable for you. The following 3 publications are on the University of Florida Cooperative Extension website and directly address growing things in the shade in Florida:

http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep457, http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep072, and http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/lh011. Since most of Florida has sandy soil the assumption in such publications is you will be dealing with sandy soils. If you want to speak directly to a Volusia County extension agent, who will know a lot more than I do, they can be reached through the contact information at their website: http://www.volusia.org/services/community-services/extension/about-the-extension/contact-us.stml .
