What is this plant?

Asked July 18, 2016, 12:16 PM EDT

I saw this growing along the side of the road and wondered if it is a native wildflower or an invasive species.

It may not be clear from the photo, but it had 4 large petals.

It is difficult to tell for certain from the photo but I would say that is common evening primrose, Oenothera biennis, which is a native to your area but might be considered by some to be "weedy". There are some similar species of primrose but from where you described finding it, O. biennis is most probable.
