Ponderosa Pine pruning

Asked July 17, 2016, 11:06 AM EDT

Hi. I recently bought a property that has several Ponderosa Pine trees with dead branches on the lower section of the trunks that need to be removed. I would like to get the job done yet this summer but am concerned about preserving the health of the trees. My question is: "What is the best time of year to prune Ponderosa Pines?" Thanks! Thanks for the question...this one is pretty easy actually...you can prune dead limbs anytime of the year, just prune close to edge of the bark and live branches in late fall and winter (to prevent pitch moths from laying eggs and creating pitch masses on the trunk). Use proper pruning technique..basically prune at the outside edge of branch collar, just out from the bark where the trees healing chemicals are greatest.
