Suckers growing up from tree roots

Asked July 16, 2016, 12:55 PM EDT

Prairie Rose Crab Apple trees have many what I calll suckers growing up from the roots. Trees were planted by professionals 4 years ago and are 2 - 3 inches in diameter. Is there anything that can help reduce this growth? Is continuing cutting off the suckers harmful to the trees? Trees now have very thin layer of wood much around them. Thanks so much. What you are seeing is normal behavior. You will get fewer and fewer suckers as time passes. In the meantime, all you can do is cut them off. it does not harm the tree. The suckers are from the rootstock used, not the tree itself.
