Amending clay soil for planting xeric

Asked July 12, 2016, 3:38 PM EDT

We are converting a lawn (clay soil underneath) to xeric plants. How should we amend the soil and what is the best mix to buy from landscape firms to add berms, etc? We walked Kendrick Lake park demonstration garden and it seems to use a lot of small size rock. Is pea gravel, squeege a good product choice to mix with existing clay and new topsoil? thanks for your assistance. Jon Jung in littleton CO

Hi Jon,
You will want to amend clay with organic matter, as described in Fact Sheet on choosing a soil amendment http://extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/garden/07235.pdf . Organic matter will help increase the pore space in the clay soil.
