Honey crisp and Gala espalier tree with no flowers at all.

Asked July 10, 2016, 4:09 PM EDT

I have 2 apple trees which have bloomed over the years. Last fall and spring I saw a lot of fruit buds, but there were no (not one!) flower this spring. I still see nice short fruiting buds on the tree, but some just start growing into what looks like long vegetative growth. What do you think happened? and what can I do next year to help? Thanks! Pear trees had buds and fruit this year, as well as blueberries (near apple trees). NW Salem, OR

No flowers on productive fruit trees are often traced to one or several reasons, among them these: Late frost which kills buds; pruned too late in the year; excess shade; pruned too severely; and/or excess fertilizer.
