Type of tree to get.

Currently, have an Mature Ash Tree in my front yard and in the autumn the leaves fall fairly early (Oct 10th-20th). I want like to plant another good shade tree nearby but not a Ash Tree. Which tree would best? I would like the leaves to turn color and fall from the trees fairly the same time. Also, I would like to plant the tree near a stump that I had grounded out. How far do you recommend planting the new tree from that old stump removal?

Tree selection really is a personal matter but if you are looking for fall color maples provide a good choice in the oranges and reds. Many of the new hybrids provide faster growth and pretty color. There certainly are others. I think you should visit a good local nursery and look at the trees. A good nursery will have color, picture hang tags that tell and show what the tree will look like, as well as the size when mature. Here is a link to some info that you can look at. http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/recommended-trees-for-minnesota/southwe... . http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/red-maple/index.html . I would plant the new tree no less than 4-6 feet away from the removed stump.
