We have noticed this summer is lacking the familiar sounds of summer insects like crickets and locusts. are there any explanations for the causes?

I believe it's a bit early to be concerned. In my experience, the peak time of the year for crickets, grasshoppers, and dog-day cicadas (locusts are grasshoppers) begins during the dog days of summer. So, it's a bit early for the "big sing!"
