Scale is a tough pest and timing of control measures is very important.
In July wear household dish washing gloves and crush the scales that you can see or rub with a brush and clear all that can be reached.
.August is the time to manage the pest with insecticides, the timing of the spray is important. Follow the directions on the product that is labeled for the treatment of magnolia scale.
Use a dormant oil spray in the spring after the spring thaw but before bud break. Instructions are given in the resources listed.
Soil drenches with imidacloprid are effective but have devastating effects on the pollinators that visit the flowers.
