Thank you for attaching the image. Your mystery shrub is an aucuba, Aucuba japonica, which also goes by the names Japanese aucuba and gold dust plant. It is hardy to USDA zones 7 to 10.
Aucuba is popular as a foundation planting. It’s yellow-flecked leaves provide a spot of light in a partially shaded site. In colder parts of Virginia, aucuba often dies to the ground in winter. It grows 6 -15 feet tall by 5-8 feet wide, depending upon the surrounding conditions. (https://pubs.ext.vt.edu/426/426-607/426-607_pdf.pdf)
