Raspberry bush

Asked June 30, 2016, 10:17 PM EDT

What is this little "tree" looking part on my raspberry bush? It is like 7 ft tall! The leaves are different too from the fruit producing canes. What canes do i prune down, the ones that produced fruit, and leave the prickly non fruit bearing canes for next years crop?

Clay County Minnesota horticulture raspberry

The tree in you pictures appears to be a buckthorn. If it keeps its leaves all winter that is what it is. A seedling established itself and has taken hold. I would suggest you cut down and pull our. Raspberry canes that are complete in their growing cycle will turn brown in color. These should be pruned out at ground level each season.
