What has happened to the Monarchs this year?

I have not observed a single Monarch this year? What is going on with them?

As you probably know, the mid-continental monarch butterfly population has declined precipitously in recent years.

It might be too soon to assess trends this season. Monarch numbers in Minnesota vary somewhat from place to place so that some people may report seeing a significant number and others few or none.

In any case, like you, others are certain to note the species scarcity locally.

I finally saw 1 monarch but that has been it for the year. I actually saw a few honey bees in my yard yesterday and today....it is nice to see them. Bob Jones

I agree. I've seen two monarchs in the yard--or maybe the same monarch twice. That's it. But many bumblebees have been visiting the shrub roses.

Honey bees....much rarer sighting these days.
