Understory trees

My woodlot is thinning out and I want to plant trees that will replace the old ash trees. What can I plant and how do I plant them? I would like something with color, like maples.

Before planting any of these, but especially before planting maples, get a soil test done:

Some maples (red maple, sugar maple) don't do well in alkaline soil.
