We're trying to decide what to do with our weigelia shrubs. . . Bloomed for a short time (a couple of weeks)and then nothing. . . Have kept them watered and they get partial shade facing south because of a large tree. . . Honey Locust. Shrubs are only in 2nd season

Weigela bloom for a few weeks in the spring or early summer. Some varieties, especially newer ones, bloom lightly throughout the summer, but not at the same level as the spring flush. They often have nice leaves, so the plants add a good accent to the garden even when not in flower. Weigela like full to part sun. They will likely bloom better in full sun than in the shade of your tree. If you are not getting as many flowers as you want you may try moving them to a sunnier location, but you will never get a summer-long, full flowering plant.
