Asked June 16, 2016, 1:21 PM EDT

For the past 2 to 3 yrs, my spruces are loosing their needles and on one e tree the top has died but looks like another is ryig to replace it, see photo. My question is, can they be saved or should i just cut them down... what pine tree to replace them and where to buy? Cannot load photo, they are aboht 40 to 50 ft high.

Thank you for the question. It is hard to diagnose a tree without seeing it. Blue spruce are susceptible to a variety of insect pests and diseases. For such large trees, it is even better to have them evaluated by a certified arborist. We can't tell you from the information provided if your trees need to be removed or not. As for replacement, the growing conditions need to be evaluated in order to choose the correct plant for the desired space.

We do have a self diagnostic program that can be linked here. Give it a try and see if you can narrow down the problem: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/ You will need to go out and carefully look at the branches, trunk, and needles of the trees to begin to figure this out.
