Newly Planted White Birch

Asked June 6, 2016, 4:39 PM EDT

Hi, My newly planted white birch has a infestation of something on the underside of the leaves which are deforming the leaves and killing them. What can it be and how do I treat it?

This looks like spiny witch-hazel gall aphid damage. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/shade-tree-galls http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG58_IPM_Birch.pdf Predatory insects usually give enough control so that chemical treatment is not necessary. vw
