I want to grow crabapples

Asked June 5, 2016, 1:11 PM EDT

I'm actually considering buying a crabapple tree as a gift. Do I need to purchase a "boy and a girl" so that my family will actually grow crabapples? Thanks. robyn

You do not need to buy a pollinizer tree to grow a crabapple tree. There should be enough cross pollination from plants in the Rosaceae family in the vicinity that the tree should be fine.
Crabapples in general can be susceptible to several fungal diseases. It is recommended to purchase the most disease resistant varieties. See the attached links http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/landscape/trees/hgic1007.html
