Potato Problem

Asked June 2, 2016, 2:53 PM EDT

Hi, Do you have any idea what could be causing my potato plants to die? It seems to originate at the very root (base) of the plant. A healthy stem seems to soften and brown and the plant falls over and wilts. At first it was just one. Now within a few days there are four or five plants dying. Can it be treated?

Suggest you dig up one of the plants and examine the base of the stem. Look for any discolorated lesions appearing either red or brown. This would be the symptoms for Rhizoctonia canker or commonly called black scruf. The attached publication will help you with your diagnosis and suggested control measures. This is a soil- borne disease. The extended rains of the past few weeks provided ideal conditions for the disease to surface. http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG55_IPM_Series_Pota...
