Leaves falling off my cold hearty Magnolia

Asked June 1, 2016, 12:23 PM EDT

I have a full grown cold hearty Magnolia here in New Jersey. This Spring it seems as though there is an abundance of yellow leaves appearing and falling off? Is this a good time to fertilize with Holly Tone? Thank you

Magnolia (and hollies) drop old leaves in the spring (not the fall like decidious trees do.) These are old leaves, that were new about 3-4 years ago. If that year was a particularly good one for new growth, the tree would have produced a lot of leaves that year. So, when it comes time to drop them, a larger number of leaves drop that other years. All normal.
