Wood boring insects

Asked June 1, 2016, 11:26 AM EDT

I found quite a bit of "saw dust" on my deck this morning and later I saw two holes, about 1/4" diameter in the railing. Can you tell me what critter may be causing this and what I can do to get rid of it, or at least prevent further damage?

The carpenter bee has found your deck suitable for nesting. You may see the male flying around threatening your presents and the female nearby drilling into the wood. The male does not have a stinger. The attached publication will provide suggested control measures and describe its life cycle. http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG29_Carpenter_Bees....
