Periwinkle and weeds

Asked May 24, 2016, 11:15 AM EDT

We planted periwinkle in our backyard after failed attempts at growing grass in the soil we have. The periwinkle has finally developed, after two years. But so have the weeds. I understand there is nothing that can be done with the latter except pulling them every couple of weeks, as any weed killer will also kill the periwinkle. What if I got a weedwacker and just kept the entire area level, both periwinkle and weeds. Not the preferred method, I know, but wouldn't the periwinkle still prevail as it has some leafage?

Using this type of weed control will stress the plant and it will decline.
