pear orchard spraying

Asked May 20, 2016, 2:48 PM EDT

Dear Master Gardener, I'm moving to a property adjacent to a commercial pear orchard. What can I do about the spray? What are the best hedges to plant on our shared property line? Are there any protocols for inviting the orchard owner to notify me about spraying dates so that I can stay inside with the windows shut? I'll be most grateful for your input. THanks, Rebecca

It is a great idea to discuss your concerns about pesticide applications with your neighbor, this is the best way to avoid conflicts. There is not a set protocol for this. Most growers have no problem providing spray notification ahead of the application and will take precautions to avoid pesticide drift. Hedges of all sorts have a minimal effect on preventing drift. It is much more effective to work with the grower.
