Hydrangeas

Every year I cut my plant back in the fall, this year there are only brown buds, green leafs are growing from the bottom and I don't know what to do, should I cut it back again now? Usually I have green buds. Thanks

Hello,

If you have green growth coming from the bottom and last year's sticks are completely brown with no green growth on any of them, break one of the sticks to see if they are brown and dead. If all are brown with no active leave bud growth, cut them down. The warm winter and extreme fluctuations in temperatures could have frozen and killed the above ground buds on the stems. The early warmth pushed the buds out of dormancy and then they hit with well below freezing temperatures killing many buds.
