Asked May 16, 2016, 10:05 AM EDT

I planted native plants in an corner area of my lawn the collects alot of water. Should i mulch to prevent weeds or would that rot the plants? If yes, what type of mulch is best? Ibought these plants at the sale and was advised by the master gardeners of which to buy,but i didn't think to ask about mulch. Thank you.

It would be okay to lightly mulch the new plants to conserve moisture and keep the weeds down. You can apply any type of an organic mulch. It is important to keep the mulch thin no more than several inches and away from the base of the stems to prevent rot and fungal diseases.
