Privacy shrubs next to pine trees

Asked May 15, 2016, 6:01 PM EDT

We want a privacy fence made from shrubs. They will go in front of very tall pines that have been trimmed about 20 feet high so there is no privacy. They won't get full sun. We have 160 feet we have to cover. We live in Sherburne County and our soil is all sand. We would like some color if possible but not required.
Thanks. Aaron Morrison

Any of the following might serve your purpose:

Hedge cotoneaster (Cotoneaster lucidus), gray dogwood (Cornus racemosa), red twig dogwood (Cornus sericea), hazelnut (Corylus americana), Amur maple (Acer ginnala), spirea (Spirea Vanhoutte), ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius), viburnum (any of several species).

Of these you'll get the best fruit, flower or autumn leaf color (not all of these from any one selection) from ninebark, Amur maple, spirea, and viburnum, especially Viburnum trilobum or Viburnum dentatum. Cornus sericea has colorful red stems in winter.
