Help identifying wild plant.

Asked May 15, 2016, 12:32 PM EDT

I see people picking this plant from the ditches. Many of them are of Asian/ Chinese culture. Just wondering what it is called. The bigger plants have a red/purple stem and the smaller ones have green stems. The leaves are green and remind me of a lily leaf.

The plant in the photos may be Solomon's seal (Polygonatum species). However, without flowers it is not possible to provide a definitive identification.) Solomon's seal is native to Iowa. It produce greenish white flowers which hang down from the leaf nodes.
