Splitting red bud

Asked May 15, 2016, 11:05 AM EDT

I have a red bud that is splitting at the main fork. My concern is that once it has all the leaves on it, the weight will cause it to split even more, Can I somehow use a strap or some sort of system to support the two main sections to keep them from completely splitting? Also, is there a bonding or grafting agent that I could use to help repair the tree? Hank

I would recommend consulting with a licensed arborist. The International Society of Arboriculture has a database where you can locate an arborist in your area. The arborist will be able to evaluate the damage to the tree and suggest a course of action. It's tricky and can be unsafe to do this without proper advice. It's also important to prevent fungi and other microorganisms from entering the wound and initiating rot.
