Kwanzaan cherry bark split

Asked May 15, 2016, 7:38 AM EDT

I have a ~12 foot tall Kwanzaan cherry planted about three years ago. Overnight this crack opened up in the bark and I'm wondering what I can do to save the tree or if I need to replace it. Can I tie the bark closed? The split is a little over 12" long. Thank you!

This does not look promising, as that is quite a split, not simply a frost crack or sunscald.
How does the canopy look?
This looks like a street tree, and we'd recommend contacting your local municipal forestry people.
