linden tree low branches
This high up in the tree I strongly suspect squirrel damage. This is a considerable amount of bark - and it even looks as if some of the wood has been shredded - highly unusual for grey squirrels, but much more common with fox squirrels.
If extensive enough it is possible that this damage can be very hard on the tree.
